Key Work-Time Limits
The following limits apply to all commercial drivers required to maintain a work-time logbook:
Continuous work: Maximum 5.5 hours before a 30-minute break is required (7 hours for Small Passenger Service drivers with fares under 100km)
Work time per shift: Maximum 13 hours of actual work time (driving + other duties) within a 14-hour on-duty window
Rest between shifts: Minimum 10 hours continuous rest
Cumulative work period: Maximum 70 hours of total work time
Rest between periods: Minimum 24 hours continuous rest to start a new work period
Rest break: Minimum 30 minutes β any break shorter than 30 minutes counts as work time

How long can I drive for before I need to take a break?
If you are only driving under a Small Passenger Service Licence (SPSL) and don't take a single fare longer than 100km in distance then you need to take a minimum 30min break after 7 hours of "on duty" time.
For all other drivers, you must take a minimum 30min break after 5.5 hours (5 hours and 30 minutes) of continuous on-duty time.

Yes, if you are doing any commercial driving in a Cumulative Work Period that requires you to log your work-time (and follow the work-time rules) then you also have to record all other work time in your logbook too.

What is a "Cumulative Work Day"?
A Cumulative Work Day (or Work Day) consists of a single Work Shift of up to 14 hours on-duty time, containing a maximum of 13 hours of actual work time (driving + other duties), followed by a minimum 10-hour continuous rest break. Your Work Day is not defined by a calendar day β it starts when you begin your shift.

Your CWP is a collection of Work Days and is all of your "work-time" from each day added together. This total work-time is not allowed to exceed 70 hours. In order to start a new Cumulative Work Day you need to take a full 24 hours of rest before starting a new shift.
