New Zealand law requires commercial drivers to keep work-time records. These are the limits Logmate tracks.
What are the limits?
Rule | Limit |
Continuous work (most drivers) | 5.5 hours maximum |
Continuous work (SPSV/TAXI) | 7 hours maximum |
Valid rest break | 30 minutes minimum |
Work-time per shift | 13 hours maximum |
On-duty time per shift | 14 hours maximum |
Shift record length | 24 hours maximum |
Rest between shifts | 10 hours minimum |
Work-time per Work Period | 70 hours maximum |
Rest between Work Periods | 24 hours minimum |
When does the 7-hour limit apply?
The 7-hour continuous work limit only applies when all three conditions are met:
The vehicle type is SPSV or TAXI
There are no Other Duty entries in the shift
All fares are under 100 km
If any condition is not met, the 5.5-hour limit applies.
What is a valid rest break?
A rest break must be at least 30 minutes. Breaks shorter than 30 minutes count as work-time and do not reset your continuous work timer.
What is a Work Period?
A Work Period is a series of Work Shifts separated by less than 24 hours of rest. Your total work-time across a Work Period cannot exceed 70 hours. When you rest for 24 hours or more, a new Work Period begins and your balance resets.
What are violations?
Logmate records a violation when you exceed a limit:
Violation | What it means |
Off Duty Violation | Started a shift with less than 10 hours rest (or less than 24 hours for a new Work Period) |
Continuous Work Violation | Exceeded 5.5 hours (or 7 hours for SPSV/TAXI) without a valid break |
Total Work Time Violation | Exceeded 13 hours of work-time in a shift |
On Duty Violation | Exceeded 14 hours on duty in a shift |
Work Period Violation | Exceeded 70 hours of work-time in a Work Period |
Violations are permanent. They are visible to your approved TSL Holders and Enforcement Officers. See Does Logmate Stop Me From Working? for how warnings work.
